Wyoming Ice Climbing

Wyoming is well known for great ice climbing. The temperatures are generally colder than Utah making the ice quite a bit different than Utah ice is some ways. Also the approaches to ice climbs in Wyoming are much longer than in Utah. This means that you don't fight the same crowds you do in Utah and get a more wilderness type experience.

Wind River
Ice bouldering in Wind River Canyon, on the way to climb some Cody ice!

Thermopolis
This is ice that was formed from hot springs that flowed over these small cliffs. It makes the ice a bit different from normal waterfall ice, since it was hot water right before freezing and since the water is mineralized.

Five Springs
This is a very fun climb up near Five Springs Falls in Northern Wyoming. It gets no sunshine during the day so the ice is cold and hard. There is also water still flowing underneath the ice.

Five Springs
Neil on the same climb. The ice in some places is less than an inch thick, so one must be careful not to fall through the ice and dangle in the falls.

Five Springs
After setting a toprope, we're able to climb it as often as we want and try some slightly different routes.

Deer Creek
This is Deer Creek Falls, one of the easiest routes in South Fork, outside of Cody. It also has water still flowing under the ice. While rappelling down, Neil crashed through the ice and his legs were dangling in the flowing water.
