Just outside of Kanab, UT there's a bunch of cool sand caves. None of them are true caves, in the sense that you can get far enough back to not need a light. But some of them were a lot of fun to visit, nonetheless. Several of them are privately owned. Please respect the posted no trespassing signs you see. But I'll mention a few that have public access. Off to the right, there's a topo from Topozone of the area, showing what caves are private. And if you want to pay to visit the main Moqui Cave (the topmost cave on the map), you can find information on it here. |

The first one we visited (number 1 one the topo) had several entrances, you can see from the road, that all interconnect. Just off to the left of this picture, there's some other entrances that offer easy access to get into the caverns. You can hike along the base of the cliff until you find some class 2/3 scrambling to get up onto a bench, above the slickrock cliffs. Then you can simply walk into the cave. |

This is the second of the caves we looked at. This one is number 2 on the topo map. It was a little harder to get to, and not as cool looking as the previous one. But probably still worth visiting. As you can see from the map, you drive a little ways up Kanab Canyon, keeping your eye high and to the left, until you can spot the cave. Then just scramble your way on up. If you go far enough to the left, when facing the caves, you'll find easier trails. |

This last cavea is further up the Kanab Canyon road. It has an underground "lake" or pond. Just has one chamber, that doesn't appear to go back very far. Topo can be found here. |
